Pruning Rule of Thirds for Shrubs

Things to do in the garden this winter.

Now the cooler months are with us. It is a great time to get busy in your garden.

From planting garlic to pruning roses there are a multitude of important jobs that need to be underway.

Have you thought of an early crop of your favorite spuds? Or getting your gardening beds ready for asparagus planting.

Winter is also the time to plant fruit trees.  Apples and pears are best grown horizontally along wires attached to posts or your fence.

Rake up the fallen leaves in your garden and add them to your compost.

Apply mulch, bark, wood chips and or straw over your garden beds to protect your soil.

Prune apple and pear trees whilst they are without leaves.  Remove the damaged dead and diseased branches first then thin out the overcrowded parts and the branches that grow back through the tree.  The horizontal branches will produce the most fruit so remove any unneeded vertical shoots.

Give your trees/shrubs a good haircut before spring growth takes you by surprise, keeping you and your neighbors happy by preventing out of control growth.

All in all, get busy in the garden over winter as you will reap the rewards over the spring and summer months.

Staff at VK Lawn and Gardens are happy to help you get your garden in order.  We love section clearing, weeding, trimming and pruning.  We will also take your unwanted garden waste and other rubbish away.

Cheers and Happy Gardening.
